Amulets that Charm Afghans

One of the most magical objects that has been used across ages is amulet. Amulets are worn upon the person, animal or hung on objects to protect from evil. This tradition has also been popular in Judaism and Christianity. Like its sisters, to some degree, Islam is full of superstitious beliefs. Today, in Afghanistan’s big cities, in every streets and in every corner of buildings, you can find men dressed in tattered clothes writing amulets to safe people’s life from evil or bring to their clients good luck.

Sometimes, they claim that their amulets can protect from dangers, like the Taliban’s suicide bombers or they can bring back to life the dead baby in mother’s womb. What they write in amulets are either verses of Qoran or some other religious jargon. In either case, they have a good business with religion. In someway, the amulet’s business stands in contrast with what the Taliban suicide attackers believe: going to heaven and sleep with 72 virgins. But these amulet writers give hopes to those who need help and they fight against evils.
