Old Furnace in Central Afghanistan

I can’t remember exactly where and in which village I took this photo, but I remember it was somewhere in Ashtarlay district, in Nili province, in the central highlands of Afghanistan. This photo reminds me my mother who used to bake bread for us in similar fashion. I was my mother’s boy, like this boy you see in this photo. I was always near her, helping her with placing dough and liquid at her reach, most importantly offering her cold water to cool down as she was exposed to direct heat. The photo is a it misty because of the thick smoke hanging the baking room. It was early in the morning when I stopped at this place to get a cup of tea. We are offered fresh sourdough bread and hot black tea. I never forget how people were kind and hospitable in Daykundi.
